January 27 (Ottawa) The Georgia based peanut plant that has been fingered as the cause of the nation wide salmonella outbreak has received previous citations for numerous health concerns. In 2006 and 2007 the plant was given multiple warnings for grease residue and dirty work surfaces, rust build up and unmarked spray bottles. The plant has been shut down following the outbreak of salmonella, and chances of it re-opening are very slim. Why nothing was done sooner to get things under control at the facility is a question that Americans are asking, as it was more than obvious to those who could do something about it, that the plant was an accident waiting to happen. Because nothing was done, 7 people have died and more than 500 have fallen ill after eating peanut butter produced from the plant laced with salmonella bacteria. More than 125 products across the country are being recalled as they contain peanut butter that is believed to be contaminated with salmonella bacteria.
