Know Your Lore: Current Alliance politic... Know Your Lore: Current Alliance politics -- the gnomes
05/23/2010
The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You're playing the game, you're fighting the bosses, you know the how, but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft . WARNING: The following post contains small spoilers for Wrath of the Lich King. Players who are still playing through the expansion and wish to avoid spoilers may want to avoid this post. In addition, theories behind the new Cataclysm race/class combinations will be discussed. Last time on Alliance politics we looked at the night elves , who have had arguably the largest impact on Azeroth of any race currently living, and a lengthy history, as their current leader has been in power for approximately 10,000 years. The night elves have an extensive amount of history to back up their current political stance, but today we're going to look at a race that doesn't really have a lot of history to speak of (or at least they didn't until the launch of Wrath of the Lich King ): the gnomes. The gnomish race has been relatively low profile in World of Warcraft and in the Alliance in general. Friendly to everyone, regardless of faction, the gnomes are quite happy to teach engineering to anyone who will listen. They generally avoid conflict where they can and honestly the main reason they joined the Alliance wasn't due to their beliefs or any strong feelings, it was due to circumstances at the time. Let's take a quick look at the background of the gnomes and how the events in Wrath could potentially affect future political entanglements. Continue reading Know Your Lore: Current Alliance politics -- the gnomes Filed under: Lore , Know your Lore Know Your Lore: Current Alliance politics -- the gnomes originally appeared on WoW.com on Sat, 22 May 2010 20:00:00 EST. For Gnomeregan! It's time for battle! For Gnomeregan! It's time for battle!
05/22/2010
For Gnomeregan! is where the members of <B.L.O.G.> on US Shadow Council-A roleplay guild meetings as part of an in-blog and in-game RP campaign. The rules for this campaign are: no ERP (erotic roleplay) and no vampires (though death knights are welcome). Everyone is invited to participate. Assume that to get into the guild, you at least pretended to be in full use of your faculties and are willing to fight for the cause. You are all welcome to join us here in the comments and those who wish to play with us in-game should friend Peenk or Kixi and ask for an invite on US Shadow Council-A. Hey! My name is Kixi and I'm subbing for Peenk this meeting. I'm her cousin and ... well ... yeah, I'm dead. I guess "undead" is the appropriate term. Whatever. I "died" during that whole Gnomeregan fiasco and then had to do chores for the Lich King for a bit, but now I'm back to help avenge my unlife! Or something. I don't quite get this life/death thing anymore. It used to be so clear! But I'm rambling. And that's something that's been going on too long here. Rambling. Many of you are out there ... training ... not hanging around in bed in Teldrassil inns. Ahem. But we've still been lax. So Peenk has made me her Person In Charge Of Training, or PICOT. I guess that's some sort of stitch or other. So I'm a stitch in time! Polite laughter is appropriate here. Continue reading For Gnomeregan! It's time for battle! Filed under: RP For Gnomeregan! Ready Check: Zen and the art of precogni... Ready Check: Zen and the art of precognition
05/22/2010
Ready Check focuses on successful raiding for the serious raider. Hardcore or casual, Icecrown Citadel or Ulduar, everyone can get in on the action and down some bosses. Your regular host, Mr. Michael Gray , is still trying to fight his way out of Tyler's fever dreams , so Ready Check this week has fallen to me. I had to check in the blackened heart and the mage-hate on the way in, so if you want that stuff, you'll have to read Blood Pact . I toyed with the idea of doing some hardcore theorycrafting post or the like, but instead I want to talk about one of the raiding "soft skills." Hamlet said, "What a piece of work is a man! How noble in reason! how infinite in faculty! in form, in moving, how express and admirable! in action how like an angel! in apprehension how like a god!" Today, we look at angelic actions through godlike apprehension. Phat Loot Phriday: Sleeveless T-Shirt Phat Loot Phriday: Sleeveless T-Shirt
05/21/2010
Bah, weapons! Who needs 'em? Armor? For sissies! Real soldiers enter battle in nothing but a Sleeveless T-Shirt ! The last time we featured a shirt on Phat Loot Phriday , we took a look at Precious's Ribbon from Icecrown Citadel. It's a great shirt ... if you want to win a prize for biggest pansy. If you're truly a badass, nothing less than the Sleeveless T-Shirt can contain all your awesomeness. Fine, it probably isn't the smartest thing to wade into battle wearing just a Sleeveless T-Shirt, but you'll be sure to inspire more than a few gasps and maybe even make some enemies drop their weapons and flee your bodaciousness. But don't count on it. Name Sleeveless T-Shirt Type Shirt Attributes has no sleeves (obviously) has flavor text has the distinction of being the only shirt in the game to be stealthily upgraded from poor (gray) quality to common (white). That's right, even the developers thought the shirt was so badass they decided to change the item quality in Patch 3.3.3! 05/21/2010
That's right, hopeful writers -- the Breakfast Topic coffee cup is back, ready to be filled up with your submissions. We've had such a great time over morning coffee with our guest Breakfast Topic posters that we're opening up submissions once again. What's on your mind (and what do you think is on other players' minds) when it comes to WoW ? Write it up as Breakfast Topic and submit your article for consideration through Seed, Aol's guest writer program . We're looking for Breakfast Topics in our usual conversational style , asking the community for their thoughts on your WoW -related topic. Submissions should be between 200 and 500 words (with a wee bit of wiggle room in either direction). Only the best submissions will be accepted. Here's what to do: read up about the Seed program , sign up and then submit your article (you can't see the article page unless you have a Seed account). Unfortunately, we are currently only able to take submissions from individuals living in the United States; we hope to be able to accept international submissions in the future. We'll accept Breakfast Topic submissions for this call-out until 11:59 p.m. EST on Thursday, May 27. We hope to be sharing a steaming cup of joe (or hot green tea -- with English muffins and Nutella, of course) over your words soon! Shifting Perspectives: Mana in Cataclysm Shifting Perspectives: Mana in Cataclysm
05/21/2010
Every Friday, Shifting Perspectives explores issues affecting balance druids and those who group with them . This week we are taking a look into the concept of mana and the changes that it will undergo in the next expansion. Time for fun! Last week I made a pretty stern comment that I did not want to discuss leaked alpha content. I am still holding true to that principle; however, that does not mean that I am against speaking about things which have already been released, which is why I wish to talk about mana regeneration this week. As with all of my Cataclysm articles at this point, everything contained herein is pure speculation existing in a void of what-if. I do not work for Blizzard, I do not know Blizzard's design goals; I only know what the rest of you know that post of the forums know. Mana is a very important resource mechanic. I want to bring attention to this thread that is currently running in the damage-dealing forums that has so far held a lot of very good discussion on the topic of mana. Mayeli makes a number of very good points, but most important of all is that this view is very consistent with Blizzard's views on how mana regeneration is going to work in Cataclysm . I am sure most of you remember this following post by my favorite dragonling two months ago, right? Eyonix Spirit - Come Cataclysm, this stat should only be found on healing gear. Non-healing casters will have other systems in place to regenerate mana, and we are designing special solutions for Elemental shaman and Balance druids who often share gear with healers (more on this below). Raid buffs that currently boost Spirit (such as Blessing of Kings) will only boost the primary stats of Stamina, Strength, Agility, and Intellect. We are also likely changing the five-second rule and other quirks of the current regen system. source Continue reading Shifting Perspectives: Mana in Cataclysm Filed under: Druid , (Druid) Shifting Perspectives Shifting Perspectives: Mana in Cataclysm originally appeared on WoW.com on Fri, 21 May 2010 15:00:00 EST. The Art of War(craft): Looking ahead to ... The Art of War(craft): Looking ahead to battleground guilds
05/21/2010
Zach had hoped his people would be smarter this time around. He was wrong. They're dumber than ever. So, Zach ends up playing video games and escaping to a world where people aren't ignorant, misled sheep. Most of the time, anyway. Arguably one of the biggest features of Cataclysm -- I say "arguably" because World of Warcraft's next expansion is going to have a ton of new features -- would be guild talents and progression. Not much has been revealed about this feature, but it has the potential to forever change the way guilds work. In particular, the emergence of rated battlegrounds combined with guild talents geared towards PvP play can possibly result in a schism between PvP and PvE players, forcing them to choose between a PvE-oriented guild or a PvP-centric one. The guild progression system is such a great incentive for players to be part of a guild and allows guilds a better focus -- a guild's choice of talents should indicate the character of a guild. Although the benefits are relatively minor, they are telling of a guild's priorities, such as increased gold drops off bosses or reduced repair costs. Blizzard has only revealed a taste of PvE guild talents for now, but developers have mentioned that there will be PvP guild talents as well. This is where the potential for conflict arises. Players currently have dual specs that allow them to keep a spec for raiding and another talent spec for PvP, but will guilds have the same flexibility? There's not enough information to know for sure right now, but if there are distinct trees or talent for PvP and PvE, players will have to make some tough decisions when forming or joining a guild. In that scenario, guilds geared towards battlegrounds or even arena play will form and for the first time, players who thrive in PvP will have an environment in which to flourish. Continue reading The Art of War(craft): Looking ahead to battleground guilds Filed under: PvP , The Art of War(craft) (PvP) The Art of War(craft): Looking ahead to battleground guilds originally appeared on WoW.com on Fri, 21 May 2010 14:00:00 EST. The Care and Feeding of Warriors: Behold... The Care and Feeding of Warriors: Behold the orc (1-20)
05/21/2010
The Care and Feeding of Warriors is about warriors, those lovable, squeezable, strokeable bundles of pure joy who seethe with a burning inner fire, a rage that can only be quenched in blood. Matthew Rossi tries quenching it in delicious caffeinated beverages. You'd be surprised how often that works. Sometimes I lose sight of the fact that not all warriors are level 80. Quite a few of them are alts currently grinding their way through Dun Morogh or The Barrens or Silverpine or Bloodmyst Isle. So while I do plan on going forward with my fresh 80 guides for arms, fury and prot, I'm going to alternate them with an experiment I started this week, which was to level an orc warrior from scratch and see how far I get with her. (I have almost no female toons, so I figured I'd give a she-orc a try.) Yes, that's right, I rolled another warrior. In my defense, this week I've been really sick and exhausted, so what better use of my feverish time than to quest through The Barrens again? Look, the intervention didn't work, what makes you think your looking at the screen like that will stop me? Anyway, onward to discuss levels 1-20 as a warrior.
