The Daily Quest: Children's Week The Daily Quest: Children's Week
05/04/2010
Here at WoW.com we're on a Daily Quest (which we try to do every day, honest) to bring you interesting, informative and entertaining WoW -related links from around the blogosphere. Is there a story out there we ought to link or a blog we should be following? Just leave us a comment and you may see it here tomorrow! Take a look at the links below, and be sure to check out our WoW Resources Guide for more WoW related sites. It's holiday time again in World of Warcraft and this week it's all about orphans . We are introducing them to dragons, taking them into battlegrounds and abandoning them on zeppelin platforms in droves. The blogging community has a few things to say about them too. Cynwise's Battlefield Manual has a comprehensive guide to the School of Hard Knocks . Cynwise also suggests A Modest Proposal , which I highly recommend. A Healadin's Tear has some tips for the much maligned battleground achievement as well in For the Children! Big Bear Butt chronicles his time with his orphans in Limping into Children's Week . Gauss ponders The Orphan's Future in Gauss' Adventures in World of Warcraft . Cataclysm family and friends alpha has b... Cataclysm family and friends alpha has begun
05/04/2010
This is a breath of fresh air: Zarhym has hit the forums to confirm the start of the Family and Friends alpha testing phase for Cataclysm . It might the first time a Blizzard representative has publicly given a truly straight answer about the status of Cataclysm testing, either for or against. Zarhym goes on to state that the closed beta phase has not yet begun, but they will give an update when it does. As always, be mindful of scams and phishing attempts throughout the alpha and beta of Cataclysm . If you don't know a friend or family member that works for Blizzard Entertainment, you should probably avoid any sort of alpha invitation that shows up in your inbox. You're not invited, regardless of what that email might say. Choose My Adventure: You can never have ... Choose My Adventure: You can never have enough orc warlocks
05/04/2010
Choose the adventures of the WoW.com staff as we level our characters in < It came from the Blog > on US Zangarmarsh-H. So. What's with you people and orc warlocks? You voted that both Michael Sacco and Gregg Reece roll orc warlocks for their adventurers. Last week we had no WoW.com staff playing warlocks or orcs in our guild, and now we have two. When the polls go up on Friday for Christian Belt's character, you may want to be more creative. That's right -- Archmage Pants will be joining Choose My Adventure, because you demanded it. In other news, we'll be questing in Stonetalon Peak this week, when not crawling dungeons. And we have more polls today because Foxlight turned 10 on Friday and wants you to choose his talent tree and professions. But first, this week's schedule: Elizabeth Harper as Faience , the troll shaman, and Robin Torres as Robinemia , the undead mage: Monday and Wednesday, 11 p.m. to midnight EDT Michael Gray as Grayfields , the tauren hunter, will be making appearances as he can this week. Amy Schley as Patent , the troll rogue will also be making appearances as she can. Matthew Rossi as Andrenorton , his new troll mage: some time Saturday. Adam Holisky as Adammentat , the tauren druid, will be making appearances as he can. Anne Stickney as Annephora , the troll warrior, will be on Tuesday at 1 a.m. EDT (which is Monday at 11 p.m. Zangarmarsh time). Fox Van Allen as Foxlight , the blood elf paladin: Friday, 8 p.m. EDT. Michael Sacco as Sahko, the orc warlock: Wednesday, 7 p.m. EDT. Gregg Reece, the orc warlock, will be making appearances as he can. Turn the page to vote on the shirtless paladin's polls. 05/03/2010
The Cataclysm beta character copy page is available for those select few who have keys. Our understanding is this is a very small group. You'll know that you have a key and can copy your character over. If not, then you're not in it, yet. Don't fall for any scams . Blizzard has not announced the opt-in procedures or any ways to get into the beta. When they do announce it, you'll hear it here. The page is accessible at: https://www.worldofwarcraft.com/beta-charcopy/ UPDATE: Zarhym has confirmed the Cataclysm Friends and Family Alpha begins this week . WoW on iPad via streaming WoW on iPad via streaming
05/03/2010
World of Warcraft on the iPad ? Apparently, thanks to an interesting service called Gaikai . Gaikai, currently in beta, is a new technology that will let you play any game online in your browser. Here's how it works -- Gaikai hosts the games on their servers and worries about the hardware and software updates, then they stream the games to you through your browser. They call this technology "Streaming Worlds." What does this mean for the average WoW player? Well, when you have a computer that otherwise looks seemingly impossible to play WoW on such as the iPad, you can use Gaikai to stream the game via Java , Flash or Silverlight to your computer, resulting in the screenshot shown above. While the screenshot is amazing, there are doubts to its credibility since iPad's browser doesn't support Flash. Unfortunately no video of the game in action was provided. However, the concept surrounding Gaikai, and the implications for browser-based games that are graphically intensive like World of Warcraft are fascinating. The shape of raids to come: Guild leader... The shape of raids to come: Guild leaders look ahead
05/03/2010
Now that we're past the initial shock of Blizzard's revelations about the balance and progression path of 10-man and 25-man raids in Cataclysm , it's time to saddle up and move forward again. We may not know exactly where the guild progression path ultimately leads -- but experienced guild leaders are already moving into position, planning for the journey ahead with insight and a steady hand. We tested the temperature of guild and raid leaders in guilds across Azeroth as they look ahead to the shape of guilds (and raids) to come. Competition: A good thing The issue my guild will be facing will be the unified lockout each week. While it makes sense to only kill each boss once per lockout, regardless of raid size, my guild has been running two or three 10-man raids in addition to our 25-man raid group. This allowed a higher flow of gear and emblems and allowed the 25-man raid group to gear up at a considerably faster rate than if we could only run one size of the raid each week. This will most likely make us require our raiders to "put up or shut up," letting only the top 25 performers into the 25-man lockout for increased valor points and more chances at loot. The remaining raiders will be designated to the 10-man version, where they will most likely have to run more daily heroics in order to gear up at the same rate as the rest of the guild. Each week the rosters will churn a little bit, allowing players to experience both versions of the encounters amd also creating some healthy competition for the "more valuable" 25-man spots. -- Scott Carson Continue reading The shape of raids to come: Guild leaders look ahead Filed under: Guilds , Raiding , Cataclysm , Guest Posts The shape of raids to come: Guild leaders look ahead originally appeared on WoW.com on Mon, 03 May 2010 17:00:00 EST. The latest Cataclysm screenshot from Blizzard is shown above, featuring a look at a goblin rocket! I wonder if this is a mode of transportation or a doodad? Either way, it looks like it's in -- or at least aiming at -- Stonetalon Mountains. What's left of them in Cataclysm , anyway . Check out previous daily Cataclysm screenshots in our gallery bellow. Officers' Quarters: The benefits of Cata... Officers' Quarters: The benefits of Cataclysm raiding
05/03/2010
Every Monday, Scott Andrews contributes Officers' Quarters , a column about the ins and outs of guild leadership. He is the author of The Guild Leader's Handbook , available this spring from No Starch Press . If you've read WoW.com's reaction to the new Cataclysm raiding paradigm , you already know that I'm a bit biased about this whole situation. I can't deny that this announcement had me cheering. On the other hand, I'm hearing a lot of doom and gloom from around the WoW community. Few people seem to embrace these changes wholeheartedly, and that's all right. There's quite a bit of uncertainty -- even fear -- about how it will all play out. I understand that. All raiding guilds will be affected one way or the other, and it could be that your guild will have a hard time adjusting to the expansion's raiding environment. As officers, however, we can't give in to negativity. No matter how you might feel about these changes, they are happening, so let's move the conversation into a more productive area. Let's examine how Cataclysm raiding could help us as officers and how we can take advantage of these changes to help our guilds thrive. Continue reading Officers' Quarters: The benefits of Cataclysm raiding Filed under: Officers' Quarters (Guild Leadership) Officers' Quarters: The benefits of Cataclysm raiding originally appeared on WoW.com on Mon, 03 May 2010 15:00:00 EST. What StarCraft II and the Korean War hav... What StarCraft II and the Korean War have in common (StarCraft II)
05/03/2010
Blizzard Entertainment has just announced that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will release on July 27, 2010 in the United States, Canada, Europe, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Mexico, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. The game will pick up where StarCraft: Brood War left off - over 10 years ago - and will follow the story of Jim Raynor in the 29-mission singleplayer campaign. So what does StarCraft II have in common with the Korean War? July 27, 2010 is an interesting date to choose for the highly anticipated release. On July 27, 1953 the United States, the People’s Republic of China, and North Korea signed an armistice agreement, marking the end of the Korean War. We’re sure that it’s just a coincidence. But considering how popular StarCraft is in South Korea, we think it’s a pretty interesting one. ...
