BERLIN (Xinhua): Europe's largest airline Lufthansa is struggling to prepare for the worst service disruption in its history as a planned pilot strike is expected to ground about two- thirds of its flights. Lufthansa's 4,500 pilots voted on Wednesday to strike from Monday to Thursday next week to press their demands for job security, pay rises and a management promise not to outsource operations to worse-paid subsidiaries.

TOKYO: Eighteen people were injured, with one breaking a leg, when a passenger plane hit turbulence en route from Tokyo to Washington, Japanese police said Saturday. The United Airlines Boeing 747-400 was carrying 245 passengers and crew when it hit turbulence over Alaska, seven hours from Tokyo's Narita airport, a police officer at the airport said.

Colorado-based Bye Energy, Inc., announced Thursday morning (February 18) it’s working with selected technology partners to develop an electric-hybrid propulsion system (EHPS) for light propeller-driven aircraft. Colton Harris-Moore may have stolen his fourth airplane in the Pacific-Northwest, this time flying near restricted airspace relating to the Winter Olympic Games, according to a report from CNN.com. "We think it fits his pattern. We are looking for him," said San Juan County Sheriff Bill Cumming.

The National Guard says 13 of 17 people on board a downed Navy helicopter have been rescued from the crash site in Pocahontas County. Those people are now being evaluated by emergency services agencies and will be taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

The U.S. Air Force has short-listed both Mountain Home Air Force Base, and Boise’s Gowan Field as possible locations to bring in F-35 fighter aircraft. Tonight at the College of Southern Idaho, state and Air Force officials held an open public meeting to get input for an environmental impact statement. Officials say, bringing these planes to Idaho would create about 3,000 more jobs, and could secure the operations at these bases for the next 50 years.

Reporting from Washington and Los Angeles: A small private airplane crashed into a seven-story office building in Austin, Texas, on Thursday, officials said. There was no immediate explanation for the crash, but officials said it did not appear to be related to foreign terrorism. There were reports, however, that the crash might have been an act by a disgruntled engineer.

The Transportation Security Administration soon will begin randomly swabbing passengers' hands at checkpoints and airport gates to test them for traces of explosives. Previously, screeners swabbed some carry-on luggage and other objects as they searched for the needle in the security haystack, components of terrorist bombs in an endless stream of luggage.

A plane crash in California has killed three employees of Tesla Motors, the electric car venture led by private spaceflight pioneer Elon Musk, according to local news reports. The twin-engine Cessna crashed into a residential neighborhood in East Palo Alto, Calif., and was bound for Hawthorne Municipal Airport in Southern California, according to KTVU Channel 2 news. No injuries on the ground were reported. Tesla Motors has a design studio in Hawthorne, which is also home to Musk's Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) company. Musk is the CEO of Tesla Motors, which is developing a high-performance electric family sedan called the Model S.
