Russia intends to keep up with the U.S. in the space race and launch a new manned spacecraft by 2017, a senior Russian space official said on Tuesday. "We plan to enter the market in 2015 with an unmanned spacecraft and are likely to launch it from the new Vostochny space center. In 2017, a piloted spacecraft should also be developed," Vitaly Lopota, the head of Russia's Energia space corporation, said.

The Ethiopian jet that crashed into the sea off Beirut on Monday did not fly in the direction suggested by Beirut's control tower, Lebanese officials say. Ministers said the pilot of the Ethiopian Airlines jet was asked to correct his course, but turned in the opposite direction. It is not clear why this happened, or if it was beyond the pilot's control.

An Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed into the sea off Beirut was probably brought down by bad weather, Lebanon's defence minister has said. But Elias Murr said the cause of the crash could only be established after the flight recorders were recovered. The Addis Ababa-bound flight plunged into the Mediterranean shortly after take-off from Beirut in a storm. All 90 people on board the Boeing 737-800 are feared dead. At least 24 bodies have been pulled from the sea.

An Ethiopian Airlines passenger plane with 89 people on board has crashed into the Mediterranean Sea shortly after take-off from Beirut airport. Eyewitnesses say they saw a ball of fire in the sky before the Addis Ababa-bound jet crashed into the sea. Wreckage from the plane has been seen off the Lebanese coast. Most of those on board Flight ET409 were Lebanese and Ethiopian nationals. Two Britons were also on the passenger list, officials said.

A plane carrying pilgrims in Iran has caught fire while landing at Mashhad, in the north-east of the country. State media said almost 170 people were on board and that at least 46 were injured. There were no reports of fatalities. The plane, a Russian-built Tupolev 154 owned by Taban Air, suffered serious damage as it landed, losing its undercarriage and a wing. The rear end of the plane broke up after the passengers were evacuated.
