Georgia Peanut Plant Had Failed Many Pre... Georgia Peanut Plant Had Failed Many Previous Health Inspections
01/26/2009
January 27 (Ottawa) The Georgia based peanut plant that has been fingered as the cause of the nation wide salmonella outbreak has received previous citations for numerous health concerns. In 2006 and 2007 the plant was given multiple warnings for grease residue and dirty work surfaces, rust build up and unmarked spray bottles. The plant has been shut down following the outbreak of salmonella, and chances of it re-opening are very slim. Why nothing was done sooner to get things under control at the facility is a question that Americans are asking, as it was more than obvious to those who could do something about it, that the plant was an accident waiting to happen. Because nothing was done, 7 people have died and more than 500 have fallen ill after eating peanut butter produced from the plant laced with salmonella bacteria. More than 125 products across the country are being recalled as they contain peanut butter that is believed to be contaminated with salmonella bacteria.
How Many Friends You Have Could Depend O... How Many Friends You Have Could Depend On Your Genes
01/26/2009
January 27 (Ottawa) Whether or not a person has a lot of friends may depend on their gene pool. Researchers say that they have found a link between someone’s social status and the type of genes they have. Personalities differ from person to person, ranging from the social butterfly to the quiet reserved individual. For the study, researchers analyzed 1000 identical and fraternal twins, because identical twins have the same genes, and fraternal twins share half the same genes. “We found there appears to be a genetic tendency to introduce your friends to each other,” said lead researcher Nicholas Christakis of Harvard University in Massachusetts. Identical twins were found to have more of the similar social characteristics than did their fraternal counterparts.

01/26/2009
New York Federal Reserve Bank President Timothy Geithner was sworn in Monday night by Vice President Joe Biden to become U.S. Treasury secretary . Geithner vowed to act quickly to protect the U.S. economy from the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression . After two hours of debate, the Senate voted 60-34 in favor of Geithner. Majority of the dissent came from Republicans, but three Democrats broke with their party to vote against Geithner. Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin , Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia and Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa voted against him. “He’s seen the crisis unfold,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said during the debate. “He’s uniquely suited to know the difference between what has worked and what has failed.” The 60-34 vote speaks to the contentious nature of Mr. Geithner’s nomination after revelations that he failed to pay some employment taxes on time while working for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) . Senate opponents argued Geithner should not be an exception to a rule that has seen IRS workers fired over unpaid dues. Geithner will work on a massive overhaul of the $700 billion U.S. financial rescue program and is expected to propose new efforts to clear frozen credit markets within the next two weeks.
